Video Games Have Taken Over My Life

Video Ga
mes are my new movies.

Okay, so that isn’t very accurate, considering I’m still watching a lot of movies (although I’m catching up on a lot television these days) but video games are finding a new renaissance with me. I posted about that a could of months ago, but it’s even more true now. I’m back to my old ways, of playing through 3 or 4 games at a time instead of concentrating on just one.

Back in the Gamecube/Xbox days, when my interest waned for the first time since picking up a NES, I would buy the big, big games and play through them, only to shelve the system for another 4 or 5 months. What I didn’t realize was that I was missing out on a lot of gaming greatness. 2006 recaptured my youth and with the help of Laura on the RPG’s, we managed to conquer the following games:

Dragon Quest 8
Final Fantas
y 12
X-Men Legends 2
Marvel: Ultimate Alliance
Justice League Heroes

Kingdom Hearts 2 (well, most of it)

It’s not that impressive of a list, but considering that the only game I played and beat in 2005 was Katamari Damancy, which took about 2 hours, this is a pretty impressive list. And that’s not including the games we just played, like Wii Sports, Excite Truck, Guitar Hero 1 & 2, Kareoke Revolution and much, much more. Yup, gaming is back.

Right now I’m still finishing up Zelda (at the Sky Temple), while I’ve just delved into Phantasy Star 4 from the Sega Genesis Years. The Sega Classic Collection is quite possible the coolest damn thing to come out last year and I’m enjoying playing all the games I never tackled, being a SNES kid.

And let’s not forget that Laura’s brother has a Xbox 360, which we’ve spent time playing on-line Gears of Wars (the people on there are a bunch of losers) and games like Dead Rising.

On the movie front, I’ve been keeping busy so I’ve got a few movies to report
on –

Music & Lyrics – For my money, the best movie of 2007 so far. Hugh Grant as charming as always and the 80s pop music and dance moves were hilarious. Drew Barrymore had great chemistry with Grant and the movie was pretty damn funny. The Cora character, who was a mix of Britney, Christina, Shakira and all those other crappy pop chicks was on the money. Great flick that you should definitely check out.

Epic Movie – Was such a pile of crap, I can’t believe anybody went to see it. Shame on me, I know.

Catch and Release – Great to see Kevin Smith actually acting in a movie. He’s underrated and could be a great supporting comic character in any movie of this sort. Jennifer Garner is great to watch on screen but the flick was a bit on the slow side for what it was trying to do.

Night at the Museum – Laura and I caught this right at the end of
December as she didn’t feel like watching Rocky Balboa in the theatre. I must say, we were both pleasantly surprised and actually shocked at all the negative reviews. Night at the Museum is a popcorn comedy that doesn’t try to do anything special and doesn’t have to. The display’s coming to life sell the movie in itself and Ben Stiller is terrific in the title role. Check it out on DVD when it lands later this year.

The Best of Television - Early 2007

So, Laura wrote on the blog a few days ago about her favorite television shows. In doing so, she forced my hand. Apparently, I had to also write a list or be kicked out of bed for a night. Not wanting to face the prospect of a restless night on a hard floor without the very comfortable duvet cover was not something that I welcomed.

Thus, it's time to talk some TV.

As some readers might know, Laura and I pretty much do everything together, which includes watching entirely too much television. While we watched virtually everything together, we sure don’t agree on what’s actually worth watching and what’s not.

In fact, my top show is one that Laura only watched for an hour and gave up on. “I don’t do sci-fi” says Laura. Well, Laura, you’re missing out on the best show on television right now.

Here’s the list -

1.) Battlestar Galactica - While I enjoy the odd sci-fi show, I’m not what you would call a sci-fi junkie. I can’t tell you what the different races are in Star Wars, I can’t tell you all the different characters in Star Trek. I watch some sci-fi but I’m not a junkie. That said, Battlestar Galactica is the most wonderful hour of television you’ll watch every week. Sure, it’s one of those show’s where you really do need to see everything from the beginning but what television show isn’t like that these days? Starring Edward James Olmos as Commander Adama, Battlestar Galactica is the last remaining battleship in the human fleet of the 12 colonies. Computers (A.I.) called the Cylons, created by man, have wiped out all but 49,000 of the humans. Now, fleeing from the 12 planets of the colony, the humans are in search of a mythical place called Earth. It’s a damn good premise that relies on politics that mirror modern day struggles, great action scenes and wonderfully constructed characters. This is the best show on television.

2.) Lost – Say what you will about the second season and the first six episodes of the third season but Lost still has it. I never partake in dissing the show, even if there is a weaker episode because I truly believe that the creators have a plan for this show and they are going to kill it when the storyline has played out. The last episode that I saw, in which Desmond goes back in time and discovers that the universe always corrects itself, was pure time traveling brilliance. If you don’t see how time traveling can fit into the show, you might not understand the sly brilliance of this sublime show.

3.) Survivor – It’s the ultimate social experiment and that’s the reason the show has endured for over 11 seasons. It’s the first true reality program and it deserves to be around for another 11 years as long as they can keep the show fresh. Yes, the outline is always the same but it’s the small things that change. These changes always keep the show cutting edge, even if it is not being talked about in the press anymore. Awesome production values and the legendary host Jeff Probst means that Survivor will have a solid place on my list until it gets cancelled. When will that be? Not for a long time.

4.) Heroes – It’s the new show on the block so there’s no proof that show will actually be good next year. But, based on this year's storytelling, this is one of the best shows on television. There are multiple, intriguing storylines that all seem to be connecting as the first season comes to a close. Sure, sometimes you want to hit some of the characters, what, with their refusal to admit they have powers etc. but the show is usually quite solid. To be fair, most of my enjoyment of the show stems from the character of Hiro, who can bend time. He's the best character on television right now and it's criminal to think that he wasn't a character on the show until just before they shot the pilot. Now, if only they killed off Ali Larter's character. That would be awesome.

5.) Smallville - I almost didn't put Smallville on the list. It's a show that is built for a certain type of audience. Either young women and men or comic book nerds. There's not a lot of crossover appeal into the older demographics and frankly, the show can take some wacky liberties at times. Case in point, the whole Lana/Lex marriage thing that is about to go down (and for those of you that watch, if you don't think that Lana is going to have a miscarriage, you're crazy. Extremely crazy). But, I'm putting this on the list because Smallville is going through a real renaissance right now. The 6th season has been extremely entertaining, with the introduction of DC Comics characters like the Martian Manhunter and Green Arrow. Lana is about to discover Clark's secret (somehow, after 6 years, she's finally decided to use some brain power) and Clark is well on his way to becoming Superman. Oh yeah, and there also building to a season finale that is going to kill off staple Smallville character Chloe. That's going to be a heart breaker for Clark and the audience.

So, that's the list as it stands right now. Give any one of these shows a shot (you have to watch from the first episode, though) and you should find some enjoyment.

See you on the other side of the boob tube!

My Top TV Shows of 2007

Ah yes, one of my favorite things about a new year is that all the kick ass shows that I love so dearly return to the small screen. February, in particularly is awesome because of the February sweeps (a period of 4 weeks that the advertising rates for a network's schedule of shows are set up with sponsors/advertisers). So in a nutshell, they have all new episodes in February to rake in the viewers.

With that, I present to you my official:
Top TV picks of 2007

1. Desperate Housewives

Labled as a show for chicks, Desperate Housewives is so clever and funny that it attracts both genders and groups of all ages. Sure the plots are completely unbelievable, and so are the characters, but that is part of the charm. If they were believeable, then it'd be one boring ass show. Together, Susan, Brea, Linette, and Gabrielle all form likeable characters (well maybe not so much Gabrielle) who go through challenges and obsticles in their marriages or single lives. Not only is the show funny though, but in one of the episodes this season ("Bang" which aired November 5/06) was so emotional and so touching, that it even melted my heart of stone and left me in tears. Only in its third season, Desperate Housewives is consistently good, and I'm counting on more good episodes to come.

2. Lost

Yeah, the second season was a bit shakey. And yes, the beginning of season three was kinda weak too. It's time for some answers, and I'm ready for them. With so many unanswered questions, it's a struggle to not lose interest. However, after watching the last episode ("Not in Portland") we were shown Juliette's (an Other) past and it seems like we're finally starting to get some answers that we so deserve after all the support we have shown it. I still have faith, and it still is an interesting show to watch.

3. Survivor

I know tons of people would disagree on me with this one. Survivor, the most played out reality show, really? Yes, really. Host Jeff Probst, after so many years, makes the show gold. Last season and this new season has new twists which really switches up the show (ie. the immunity idol on the island) so it isn't quite as repetitive. You still find yourself rooting for your favourite character/team to win, and it's not usually predictable. Besides, what other reality show has made it through 14 seasons?

4. The Amazing Race

As much as I hate the fact that Rob and Amber are coming back to the show a second time for the All Stars show (honestly when will they ever get over themselves?), I still really enjoy the Amazing Race. Eleven teams of two travel around the globe, stopping at the most facinating places, and competing in some really difficult tasks. You also get to laugh at the teams when they're at their worst, and you get that rewarding feeling of "kicking them when they're down" type of thing. And possibly the best part is the host, Phil, a shy, non-threatening guy who once in awhile lets down his guard and shows us his more carefree side. It's good TV, that's for damned sure.

5. Heroes

Shakily making my top 5, is NBC's latest hit show- Heroes. Yeah the build up of tension is impressive, and the character's have super powers (that alone is cool) , but there's something about the show I just don't really buy. While watching it, I can't help get the feeling of "man they are trying really hard here." It's pretty contrived, and it seems like anyone and everyone under the sun has some kind of ability. But yet, I still watch it, and I still enjoy it, so I guess the writers/producers are doing their job effectively. And, Hiro, the Japanese guy who has the ability to stop time (although he hasn't recently, and I'm not sure why), is probably my favorite TV character around right now.

Honorable Mention

As if I only watch five shows on television. Please.
Other noteworthy shows? The Apprentice, American Idol (yeah, I know), South Park, and the Simpsons. Oh, and I guess I'll throw Smallville on there too, but only to appease Jake.

There you have it. This list is slightly biased as I don't watch other shows such as Grey's Anatomy (he isn't McDreamy to me, he's McAverage) , and CSI anything. A girl has to leave the couch once in awhile afterall.
